The Tripping Gypsies
Introducing Trip, Jay, Ace, Hunter, Gypsy, Speedy (the snake), and of course Margie (the bus)! This family have been living on the road since 2014. In fact, Hunter has never lived in a house! Trip and Jay converted Margie into a magnificent home on wheels that includes an open plan loungeroom and kitchen, toilet, shower, and even a jigsaw puzzle press!!
- 2 boys
- 1 dog
- 1 snake
Going to different places, seeing new things and exploring unfamiliar areas were only some of the reasons the Tripping Gypsies noted when asked “why live in a bus?”.
This lifestyle also works perfect for their boys, as they are able to wake up somewhere new and have something new to learn everywhere they go!
12 tonnes of love – Margie’s 400kg engine has been rebuilt twice by Trip and Jay! Now she’s a beast that comfortably cruises at 100km per hour. 360L of fresh water tanks (with filtered drinking water), 400W solar panels power their 480 Ah battery bank, which in turns keeps a house size fridge and freezer running with no problems.
A Couple of Questions
What got you into bus life in the first place?
Trip went on a little weekend away with someone who lived in a bus and loved it! He loved it so much, that the next week we bought a bus. That’s how quick it was for us!
How long did it take you to jump into the bus?
We left the house we were living after 7 or 8 months (of owning the bus). Everything we thought we’d need was in the bus. We didn’t have electricity, no light or fridge… but we survived!
After scouring all over Victoria, Ben and Caroline finally found the 84 Express. With 12V running throughout the bus, they have now been living off grid for over 18 months with their two daughters, and have managed to maintain a successful online business.
John & River
Within one week of finishing his rental lease, John bought his van Evie, and has never looked back! After 6 months of decking it out, he and his dog can now easily live off grid for 4 or 5 days at a time.
Reggie Dabus is a 40 foot, no luxury spared, monster! Literally a one bedder on wheels, Webby and Vicky are living the dream cruising around Oz from one gig to the next. But please, let’s not mention the fuel economy!
